I recently came across the news that Naked, a South African insurance technology company, successfully raised a record-breaking 7 billion yen (38 million USD) in its Series B2 funding round. This example underscores the vital importance of leveraging technology to transform industries.
What makes Naked particularly appealing is its 100% digital platform. With a system that allows customers to obtain an insurance quote in as little as 90 seconds and proceed to contract or pause coverage entirely online, it sets itself apart from the traditional insurance industry, which has long relied on paper contracts and manual processes. Furthermore, Naked’s business model is unique—it takes a fixed percentage of premiums and donates unclaimed funds to charitable causes. This innovative approach represents a new model of insurance that pursues economic equality.
This project is rooted in the unique challenges of the South African market. While the country has the highest insurance penetration rate in Africa, approximately 70% of vehicles remain uninsured. Additionally, life insurance coverage is below 10%, leaving a significant portion of the population underserved by traditional insurance offerings. By addressing these untapped markets, Naked aims to promote broader economic inclusion.
What particularly caught my attention was Naked’s use of AI and automation to achieve both efficiency and transparency. By doing so, they’ve managed to tackle the high-cost structure that has long plagued the insurance industry while enhancing user experience. Such technological advancements hold the potential to create ripple effects, not only within South Africa but also in other markets with low insurance penetration, such as East Africa.
