According to the Japan Ship Exporters’ Association, the total export ship contracts for 2024 decreased by 7% compared to the previous year, amounting to 11.16 million gross tons. Meanwhile, the global market has seen an increase in new shipbuilding orders. This gap can be attributed to past withdrawals and a reduction in production capacity. When we look at the field, it’s evident that preparations for the next generation are still insufficient.
The government has outlined its policy to focus on the development of “next-generation ships” as part of its efforts toward decarbonization. What’s crucial here is not just developing the technology but considering how to integrate it effectively into the entire industry. Based on my experience, the key to success lies in establishing a solid foundation and thoroughly identifying the challenges at hand.
One of the most critical points is how to ensure the market adoption of decarbonization technologies. It’s not enough to simply create next-generation ships; we need to establish mechanisms to help people understand their true value. Even if technology advances, it cannot deliver its intended impact if those who utilize it fail to keep up. For Japan’s shipyards to regain their international competitiveness, achieving a balance between technology and the broader industry is essential.
